How to extract a color palette

    1. Open your image

Drop a PNG, JPG or WebP — decoding happens locally on canvas.

    2. Pick a palette size

Choose between 1 and 16 colors depending on how granular the palette should be.

    3. Export the JSON

Download the palette as a JSON file or copy the HEX values into your project.

    Frequently asked questions

How are the dominant colors chosen?

The image is quantized to a 32-level-per-channel color space and the most frequent buckets become the palette. Transparent pixels are excluded from the count.

How many colors can I extract?

Between 1 and 16. Small numbers give you the true dominant tones; larger numbers surface secondary accents at the cost of near-duplicates.

What does the JSON output contain?

An array of palette colors, each with its HEX string and RGB components, ready to paste into a design token file or script.

Is my image sent to a server?

No. The image is decoded and quantized entirely in your browser — no upload, no account, nothing leaves your device.

    Quantization to a palette

Here is what each format is for, and when converting images into JSON color palettes is the right move.

    What is True-color images?

Photos and renders store millions of possible colors. Useful as pictures, but useless directly as a design palette or a constrained set of brand tones.

    What is Quantized palette?

Colors snapped to a coarse grid and ranked by frequency, producing a short ordered list of dominant HEX values that summarizes the image’s look.

    When you need it

Use it to build a mood-board palette from a photo, seed a poster design with the colors of a reference image, or audit which tones actually dominate a graphic. Flat illustrations give the cleanest palettes; noisy photos benefit from smaller counts.
