Frequently asked questions

How do I use Data Storage Converter?

Convert storage values between common units and see every supported unit together. Load the example or enter your own input, choose the options, then select Run.

Can I copy or download the result?

Yes. Copy the result or download it as a TXT file after processing.

What should I know before using this tool?

KB / MB / GB use powers of 1,000; KiB / MiB / GiB use powers of 1,024. Uppercase B means bytes; bit means bits.

Is my input uploaded or saved?

No. Processing runs on this device. Inputs and results are not uploaded or saved by this tool.

How many KB are in a MB — 1,000 or 1,024?

Storage uses two scales. In decimal, 1 MB = 1,000 KB; in binary, 1 MiB = 1,024 KiB. The binary units are written KiB, MiB and GiB to keep the two apart, and the gap between them grows with each step — about 2.4% at KB, 4.9% at MB and 7.4% at GB.

Why does my 1TB drive show only about 931GB?

Drive makers use decimal units, so a 1 TB drive holds 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows and most file managers then divide that by 1,024 three times but still label the result "GB", which lands on about 931. Nothing is missing — convert 1 TB to GiB here and the result starts with the same 931 your system reports.

Why was my file rejected when it looks smaller than the upload limit?

Nearly every upload limit, email attachment cap and mobile data plan is written in decimal MB and GB. A site that accepts files "up to 20 MB" means 20,000,000 bytes, which is only 19.07 MiB — so a file your file manager reports as 19.5 MiB is rejected even though the number looks like it should fit. Convert it to MB here to see the byte count the server will check.

Is a bit the same as a byte?

No — one byte is 8 bits, and the two are easy to mix up because the abbreviations look alike. File sizes are given in bytes (B) while network speeds are given in bits per second, so a 100 Mbps connection carries at most about 12.5 MB per second. bit is listed as a unit here, so you can convert either number into the other.
