Frequently asked questions

Are these page screenshots or real images?

Real embedded images — the actual picture objects stored inside the PDF (including mask files), not whole-page renders. Repeated occurrences of the same image may appear more than once.

Why is there a mask count?

Some PDFs store transparency as separate mask images alongside the pictures they mask. They are included in the ZIP so nothing is silently dropped; you can ignore them if you only want the photos.

What if no images are found?

The tool tells you clearly instead of handing you an empty archive. Text-only PDFs have no embedded images to extract.

Is my PDF uploaded?

Yes — extraction runs on our server after you confirm the upload on the page. The temporary copy is deleted when the request finishes.

What are the limits?

PDF files up to 25 MB and 200 pages. Password-protected PDFs must be decrypted first with our Decrypt PDF tool. Free use is limited to 5 conversions per day, shared across our upload-based tools — there is no unlimited option.

How are the images labeled in the ZIP?

Native JPEG and JPEG 2000 images keep their original format; everything else is extracted as PNG. Masks are separate files, clearly labeled as mask images, so you can tell them apart from photos. Repeated uses of the same image appear as repeated entries.

Embedded images vs page renders

Here is what each format is for, and when converting PDF files into ZIP image archives is the right move.

What is Embedded PDF images?

The picture objects actually stored inside a PDF — photos, logos, scans — each in its original stored form, sometimes paired with transparency masks.

What is ZIP archive?

A single archive holding every image the PDF contained, named after your file, so a batch download is one click instead of one per picture.

When you need it

Use it to recover original artwork, photos or scans from a PDF without screenshotting pages. Because you get the embedded objects, quality matches what the author put in — and repeated uses of the same image may appear multiple times.
