How to convert an image to grayscale

    1. Add your images

Drop your JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF or HEIC files onto the page, or click to browse.

    2. Convert

Click Convert — every image is desaturated in your browser; transparency in PNG files is preserved.

    3. Download the grayscale images

Download each grayscale PNG, or the whole batch as a ZIP — named with a -grayscale suffix.

    Frequently asked questions

Does grayscale conversion lose the transparent background?

No. Colors become shades of gray, but the alpha channel is kept — a transparent-background PNG stays transparent, which matters for logos and overlays.

Do I have to upload my images?

No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser — your files never leave your device.

Why does the output come as PNG?

PNG stores the alpha channel losslessly, so transparency survives exactly. A JPEG output would have to flatten transparency onto a background color and re-encode lossily.

Can I convert a batch to black & white?

Yes. Drop multiple files and all are desaturated with the same conversion — processed all-or-nothing, so a failure never writes half a batch.

What is the file size limit?

Single files up to 25 MB.

    Color to black & white

Here is what each format is for, and when converting images to grayscale is the right move.

    What is Color image?

Full-color photos and graphics. Color carries mood, but it can also distract from shape, light and composition.

    What is Grayscale image?

Shades of gray only. Desaturation keeps every pixel’s brightness and the alpha channel — it removes hue, not detail.

    When you need it

Convert to grayscale for print preparation, accessible contrast checks, or a sober editorial look. Brightness is preserved per pixel, so nothing but the hue changes; if you also need to reshape the tonal range, a full photo editor is the right tool.
