Frequently asked questions

What exactly is counted?

Five metrics: words (via Intl.Segmenter, so languages without spaces count correctly), characters (Unicode code points), non-whitespace characters, lines, and the UTF-8 byte size.

Do emojis count as one character?

Characters are counted as Unicode code points, so an emoji with modifiers may count as several code points — but the byte count reflects its true UTF-8 size honestly.

Why does byte count matter?

API limits, database fields and SMS segments are usually specified in bytes, not characters. UTF-8 byte counting gives you the number that actually matters for those limits.

Is my text uploaded?

No. All counting happens instantly in your browser — your text never leaves your device.

Honest text metrics

Here is what each format is for, and when converting any text into exact counts is the right move.

What is Length limits?

Essays, meta descriptions, tweets, SMS and API fields all carry limits — and they are not all measured the same way, which naive counters gloss over.

What is Precise counts?

Word segmentation that handles CJK text, character counting by code point, plus the UTF-8 byte size that byte-based limits actually enforce — all shown together.

When you need it

Use it to hit essay and application limits, size meta descriptions and ad copy, check SMS or API payload budgets, or audit multilingual text where naive space-splitting miscounts words.
